Volunteer Hand Knitter's Outback Adventure Tour

A small group of adventurous and eclectic Melbourne Hand Knitters' and textile artists are planning to head off on a 15 night outback camping adventure tour, to be volunteers at the world famous, amazing 10th annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival.

Leaving Melbourne on 23rd June, 2006 aboard a touring bus named "Harriet, the Queen of the Nullarbor" fitted out for relaxed travel with 10 comfy classic recliner seats, on board kitchen, central lounge and rear den, rooftop sundeck, book and c.d. library, on board computer and internet access. Camping in the outback under the stars, or in tents, photo opportunities and stops at wool shops, op shops and wineries along the way.

At the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, apart from 4000 colourful and extraordinary handcrafted beanies, there are demonstrations of traditional indigenous spinning techniques, by the 'Desert Spinners,' great food, the opportunity to participate in the hilarious 'Beanie Olympics' and 2 hour workshops, including 'Make a Dilly Bag,' felting, silk fusion, scrumbling, learn to crochet, advanced knitting, weaving and spinning.

In Alice, the tour group will camp in tents, at the Alice Springs Caravan Park, and have a cabin and hired bicycles, for their use, during their 6 day stay, leaving plenty of time for volunteering at the Beanie Festival, workshops, exploring, sightseeing and tourist activities. An overnight camping trip to Uluru is also planned. The Beanie Festival is held in the Cultural Precinct, just across the road from the Caravan Park, along with the Alice Springs Museum, Art Gallery and Territory Craft.

Fun and fibre loving volunteers travel from all over Australia to the four-day Beanie Festival, to exhibit and sell the amazing creations of hundreds of textile artists from around Australia and abroad. The money raised is used to fund inspiring Art and Craft programs for indigenous women on remote communities.

This once in a lifetime, extremely economical adventure tour, for a maximum of ten travellers, will arrive back in Melbourne on 8th July and has only a couple of places still available. Non-smokers preferred.
